For many business, no less than a sweeping change in corporate culture has come about and will continue to take place well into the next millennium. In many ways the traditional “job” is becoming a thing of the past, as companies not only change their corporate structure, but where and how they do business. (0)______. Changes in Organizational Structure Although office automation was well in place in most large business in North American and parts of Europe during the early 1980s, there was little change because technology was simply aid over outmoded organizational structures. These days though, a variety of changes have taken place and by the 21st century, managers in many large companies will have put into practice what they are learning about redesigning the organizations. (8) ______. With the maze of intelligent information systems available, they will then be able to integrate all operations into a working whole. Local area networks, or small “knowledge groups” will be in charge all phases of work, but will still keep in constant communication with other parts of the organization. The plan is that each unit of business should be managed by a self-directed team of knowledge workers. (9)______. Management holds teams accountable by allocating budgets, pay, bonuses, and other resources in proportion to performance, but allows each team to run its affairs as it thinks best. Typically, a team chooses its own members and leaders, selects its operating systems and tools, and works with suppliers directly. (10)______. Redefining the job The “traditional job” and the old concept of “pay-for-position” under which workers were paid for fulfilling specified duties such as arriving at work punctually and being cooperative with others will most likely be redefined. This system remained a sense of orderliness, but had little to do with productivity. The definition of work for the new millennium is that pay-for-position is yielding to “pay-for-performance”—a more businesslike arrangement in which employees are paid for what they produce. Already, roughly three-quarters of American workplaces use incentive rates, merit, bonuses, profit sharing, and other types of variable-pay plans. (11)______. This trend in work and job responsibility also appears to be leading toward a new, employment contract that links employee’s rights with their responsibilities. If employees enjoy freedom, in their work, good pay, and other rights without being accountable for results, the organization may not survive. (12)______. Under the new employment contract, organizations are assured of performance, workers have an opportunity to earn more and to control their work situations. The new contract should lead to a more challenging and exciting workplace. A. In most cases, performance pay is growing like wildfire, and should continue to do so in the future. B. The transformation of corporations and their new management systems are a result of society. C. Conversely, if the employees bear the burden of responsibilities without commensurate powers and benefits, they will be neither willing nor able to carry out their duties. D. Whatever the pay system and the organization are, the central idea is to ensure a sense of equity between the contributions each individual makes and the rewards he or she receives. E. Their idea is to first redefine corporate structure—to break down large organizations into small, self-managed units that can provide some well refined service. F. In effect, organizations will move away from traditional organized structure and conduct business in a more dynamic modular kind of way. G. These workers should be given almost total control—from product design to manufacturing, sales, service, disposal. 确定
